Technical Producer, Longform Distribution Unit

A critical role, managing the content - from ingest all the way to output - of over 40 high impact investigative documentaries a year.


Salary:  £42,500 - £52,500 per annum + London Weighting depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience.

Job Introduction

The BBC World Service is undergoing a significant strategic review.  It is becoming a digital first operation and WS Languages is being managed by two News Controllers – Output and Content.  This new structure seeks to refine the editorial purpose and USP of each of the 42 language services in target markets, ensuring that the BBC is known for distinctive and original content and that well-produced stories from all over the world are shared as widely as possible across the BBC. 

 

The Producer, Technical and Distribution, will be part of a team ensuring our journalism has the highest impact across all BBC platforms and beyond, now that all of the investigative documentary units have come together under the Longform division. 
 

Main Responsibilities:
  • Managing high volumes of media in a production environment
  • Responsible for transcoding rushes, managing server capacity and archiving content
  • Responsible for managing the movement of rushes into multiple post-production houses, as well as supporting the production management team across the entire post-production process
  • Helping to coordinate the production of news and social cuts, as well as supporting the re-versioning of documentaries into multiple languages
  • Managing the unit’s camera and filming kits
  • Deputising where appropriate for senior team members
  • Keep up to date with emerging industry trends
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the department’s strategy and policy
  • Seek improvements in content production to develop further efficiencies in working practices.

 

Are you the right candidate?
  • Extensive experience of managing servers for high volume data
  • A full understanding and experience of the post-production process for documentaries
  • Awareness of working internationally, and experience in the logistics of transporting production kit internationally
  • Ideally experience of working on re-versioning docs into multiple languages
  • Experience in managing camera kits and setting up workflows to manage them
  • An understanding of digital security and software analysis
  • A passion for and a great understanding of the area in which the role operates
  • Highly developed planning and organising skills and a proven ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Wide ranging knowledge of production processes
  • Able to communicate and contribute to the department strategy as required.
